about

From the Repository of misfit Tracks:

A collection of demos, unused alternate versions and lost tracks found, as well new music inspired by listening to a Radio Station in the car that brought older vibes and moods back to my attention. All my best bass grooves set to beats, my three favorite guitar parts and more organs than you could possibly ever need all gathered in one convenient place.

* * *

Some time after relocating back to civilization from the barren wastes of Central Utah I stumbled across a low power radio station run by the Salt Lake City Arts Council. At the time, at least in the moments I managed to listen, KUAA (KUAAfm.Org) played old vinyl featuring an odd mix of surf rock, funk, classic television themes as well as covers of rock hits sung in languages I wasn't always immediately able to identify.

To be fair, I was catching brief moments while I was in the car and with no regular schedule. I was hearing bits and pieces of some greater organism I couldn't even begin to fathom. I simply enjoyed the randomness it added to my day. Listening to music always makes me think of making music but this was a different feeling. There was an element of nostalgia (perhaps the wrong word) that went beyond my own recollections but certainly took me back to places in my own past; the warmth of basking in the glow of my dad playing ditties for me and my siblings on the piano in our living room, hanging out near the Spy Hunter arcade game at the corner market just to hear that electronic arrangement of Mancini's Peter Gunn, the rush I felt the first time I saw Pulp Fiction and Dick Dale's Miserlou kicked in.

I spent more than a year trying to catch those moments in new music but also managed to find some in tracks I had already written but never found a place for. While there may not be a lot of musical cohesion here I tried to order the tracks in a way that made some sense to me but I made a point not to over organize them at the same time. Going back to listening to KUAA, there were times when I clearly arrived in a themed hour or show. Other times the next song was completely perplexing, but with the context only a few minutes of listening at a time provided, who could actually say?

I should probably mention that I am in no way connected with KUAA, simply an admirer for a few moments a day. the drive from home to work and back provides only the narrowest of snapshots into the complete daily programming, and while I could listen online in much larger increments I've mostly avoided it as to not spoil the magic.
